Leones in Danger of Not Making Playoffs

Merida, Yuc. (elgordogringo.com.mx) July 27, 2021- The Leones are precariously holding onto the fourth place spot. The LMB handles the playoff format by granting the top four teams in the regular season make the playoffs, with the fifth being included if they are within a game of the fourth-place sport. This makes the final six games before the end of the season crucial because if the Leones lose half of the games, Veracruz continues their winning streak. We will be knocked out of the playoffs after being one run away from consecutive League titles in 2019.

There are some silver linings on our road to the playoffs, and one is starting pitcher Logan Ondrusek who is currently the best pitcher in the league, leading in both ERA and WHIP. I hope to see him in the lineup once or twice this week to rack up some wins for the organization and help secure us a playoff berth.

The Leones recently appointed a new manager in Purto Rican and former Leone’s outfielder, Luis David Matos. Matos comes to the organization with consecutive Caribbean Series championships in 2017 and 2018, making an immediate impact by changing the lineup putting Norberto Obeso in the top spot where he has excelled with an .458 AVG, 11 hits, and 5 runs.

Tuesday to Thursday will see the Leones take on the Tigres de Quintana Roo –who are currently in sixth place and a half-game behined, so still in the playoff hunt. The final home series will be the 30th-1st when the Leones take on the Pirates de Campeche, who is in eighth place and are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs already– but could still drag the Leones down.
